When I first seen this quote this morning… it spoke volumes to me! One of those… evaluate yourself points! (You know, the ones that can hurt )
“God is our refuge and strength, a tested help in times” (Psalm 46:1)
As hard as it is to admit, sometimes the storms we face in life can be created by our own actions. If you prayed for that job that you needed, the one that will provide for your family and you fail to work faithfully hard at it, you might find yourself unemployed. If you prayed for that mate to share the rest of your life with, and God sends you the one he has chosen for you and you failed to treat them the way that God has destined for you to, you might find yourself with relationship problems or worse, you’ve lost that spouse leaving you all alone. In both of these cases, you either did it your way, instead of God’s, or you selfishly took the job and/or spouse for granted, giving only what you wanted to give. The task may have become difficult and you chose to run making excuses to justify your actions. Blaming others instead of facing the truth. In both of these situations, God trusted you with these blessings. He knows the truth. When you fail to adhere in thankfulness to the blessing, gently caring for it, you create your own storm.
Do not misunderstand me – not all of the trials we face will be caused by our own actions. A lot of times our periods of distress will have nothing to do with what we did and will instead be caused by the evil present in this world. It is still important to remember, however, that when we go against God He will sometimes send us storms as a way of correcting us. Oh how this hurts! For this reason, anytime we face a storm it is important that our first step is to search our hearts for any unconfessed sin. Sometimes that sin can be something we harmlessly don’t realize we are doing. Although we walk a path that keeps us close to God, we must never stop learning about his world. There is so much there. We become complacent. With pride, we speak things for the world to hear wanting them to know we are “Of God”, when our actions speak louder than our words. As Christians, the world wants to watch you fail. Sadly, harsh but true. They take joy in your failing. What they don’t realize is, as Christians, we fail daily. And as Christians, we stand brave, removing all pride and ask God for guidance to right our wrongs, although the human nature is to hide from God when we have done wrong.
“‘Do not be afraid,’ Samuel replied. ‘You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.’” (1 Samuel 12: 20 NIV)
When we discover that we have created our own storm, we must take that opportunity to press in closer to God instead of turning away from Him. After all, God is the only one that can save us from the storms, even if we have created them ourselves. He may not calm them immediately but in His time, he will. If you have found that you are in the midst of a storm that you have created, find comfort in Samuels words in verse 22 when he says,
“For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people,
because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.”
If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, you are one of His people. You are one of His children. He alone will not reject you. He alone will calm the storm. You may face a heartbreaking loss in your world at the hands of life’s circumstances, but because of your faithfulness, at the calm of the storm, when your have faithfully trusted him, he will send you that rainbow. Replacing for you, something better than what was taken from you.
How wonderful to have a God that extends his hand to us when we fall. Honor him by taking that hand and following him. Trusting solely on him. To the world it may appear that you are foolishly living, but to you and God, your faith is the sowing you must do to reap the harvest. It’s NEVER to late to face a wrong to make it a right. You will find that it will make a huge difference in your world! Ask yourself this… if I do not care for the blessings that God has already given me. why should he give me more? You may get replacements, but they won’t be the quality that you’ve already had because they won’t be from God.
God is love. Your love for God shows in how you treat others. Love your children. Forgive them when they misbehave. Although you may be in a job you hate, do it to your best ability. If you have a spouse, love them no matter how many bad days they have. Never giving up on any of these. Embracing them with the knowledge that so many hearts are broken all over the world because they pray for the things that God has blessed you with.
